Is the age of your home related to the safety of your electrical wiring system?
Experts from the Underwriters Laboratories, a non-profit product safety testing organization, are in Philadelphia this week and they say a home's safety is connected to how old its wiring is. Experts say faulty wiring is not always associated with shocks or the odor of something burning.
Consumer affairs manger for Underwriters Laboratories, John Drengenberg, says bad things can be happening inside walls and it's important to know the warning signs:
"If your TV screen starts to shrink when you turn on appliances, or if your lights flicker a lot, and most importantly if you're blowing fuses or popping circuit breakers, you might have an older home. And the older homes didn't have the type of power requirements that are needed today for modern appliances." Experts say it's worth the effort and money to have a qualified professional inspect an electrical system that's 50 years or older which is roughly a third of the US housing stock.
